With the release of ...Moving England's Tony Grey has gone from displaying the most potential to living up to it as fast as any musician that's swung though Berklee's doors... But luckily, although this release reeks of the urgency and vibrancy of life (I can think of few heavier compliments to lay on a recording) there should be plenty of time for the outrageously talented young cast assembled herein to work further magic, individually and collaboratively. To call this one the greatest gift from Berklee's graduating class of '04 is understating - an auspicious beginning, indeed…

Review: Count e-bassist Tony Grey among the notable newcomers of electric bass players, who combine chops with vision. On this effort, he garners support from well-known jazz-fusion gods such as drummer Kenwood Dennard and guitarist David Fiuczynski. Many of these works are executed via trio, quartet, or quintet lineups. You'll hear snappy drumbeats, slick picking guitar and bass lines, among other attributes. At times, Grey seemed to have had "Weather Report," in mind during the construction of these altogether, peppery tone poems. Either way, Grey demonstrates the potential required to become a major force within jazz-fusion circles.

On ... Moving, the British-born Grey (a nephew of John McLaughlin) displays compositional maturity and global range, in addition to the requisite new-millennium hyper chops on his Fodera Matt Garrison 5-strings (with a high C and low B, respectively)...

NEWS

I just got back from a long month away in Japan, China and a short trip to Hong Kong…I was touring with the GREAT Japanese piano player Hiromi Uehara. We played at the Tokyo Jazz festival. This for me was an amazing experience - first I got to perform with the Hiromi Trio. As well as Hiromi and myself, the trio features the incredible Slovakian drummer Martin Valihora. While I was in Japan I met up with some old friends from Berklee College - Gilad Ronan (sax) and Lionel Loueke) (guitar). Gilad & Lionel were performing with the Monk Institute. Lionel was also sitting in with the Herbie Hancock Quartet. They both sounded great. On the last night of the festival Herbie Hancock invited a few musicians to join the band on stage for a live performance. He invited me to perform with his Quartet featuring Wayne Shorter, Dave Holland and Brian Blade along with Steve Lukather and Simon Philips from Toto. This was an unbelievable honor and a very exciting experience for me. After Tokyo we travelled to China and performed at the Toshiba Jazz Festival in Shanghai. Again, we were performing with the Herbie Hancock Quartet. I was so inspired and blessed to be able to watch these great musicians every night. We returned to Japan for the second part of the tour opening for the legendary pianist Oscar Peterson and his trio featuring bassist Niels Henning Ørsted-Pedersen, drummer Alvin Queen and guitarist Ulf Wakenius. These guys were a lot of fun to travel with because of their stories and great music. Mr Peterson is truly amazing, he is indeed a living legend.
