Vanguard Jazz Orchestra - Up From The Skies

VANGUARD JAZZ ORCHESTRA
Up From The Skies

Cat. No. 100454

Jimmy Heath has long been recognized as a brilliant instrumentalist and a magnificent composer and arranger. Jimmy is the middle brother of the legendary Heath Brothers (Percy Heath/bass and Tootie Heath/drums), and is the father of Mtume. He has performed with nearly all the jazz greats of the last 50 years, from Howard McGhee, Dizzy Gillespie, and Miles Davis to Wynton Marsalis. In 1948 at the age of 21, he performed in the First International Jazz Festival in Paris with McGhee, sharing the stage with Coleman Hawkins, Slam Stewart, and Erroll Garner. One of Heath’s earliest big bands (1947-1948) in Philadelphia included John Coltrane, Benny Golson, Specs Wright, Cal Massey, Johnny Coles, Ray Bryant, and Nelson Boyd. Charlie Parker and Max Roach sat in on one occasion.

"All I can say is, if you know Jimmy Heath, you know Bop."
- Dizzy Gillespie

"Trane was always high on Jimmy’s playing and so was I. Plus, he was a very hip dude to be with, funny and clean and very intelligent. Jimmy is one of the thoroughbreds."
- Miles Davis

NOMINATED FOR 2 GRAMMYS
BEST LARGE JAZZ ENSEMBLE
BEST ARRANGEMENT - UP FROM THE SKIES

Anchored by a Jimi Hendrix cover (Up From The Skies) and the politically poignant We Will Not Be Silenced. The new VJO/McNeely recording is driven by stunning ensemble and solo work at every turn. McNeely's music breaks down barriers, pushes boundaries and always explores the artistic edge. The New York Times has called McNeely's music "exhilarating". The National Endowment for the Arts and BMI have cited him for his compositional prowess. His compositions explore uncharted musical territory and his innovative style expands the vocabulary of his predecessors, Thad Jones and Bob Brookmeyer.

"Whatever the 'next step' is in music, I firmly believe he will be it. He has all the tools - imagination, technique, dreams, ambition..."
- BOB BROOKMEYER

"...It’s the latest demonstration that VJO is the most versatile and sophisticated jazz orchestra going."

2005 GRAMMY Winner

In 1978, Thad Jones left the Orchestra for Europe, while Lewis remained leader until his death in 1990. It is a testament to their leadership that the organisation continues today, performing under the same high standards. One way to keep the band fresh is to keep its members excited about their repertoire, and by keeping its book stocked with new charts by different arrangers. This album marks Slide Hampton's major contribution to the orchestra.

"Hampton's...new pieces are winners - especially "Past Present and Future," with its infectious fanfares and Gary Smulyan's croaking baritone solo..."Frame for the Blues" sends the VJO into orbit. Revamped for the VJO, it becomes a donnybrook between Hampton and fellow trombonist Jason Jackson.

2003 GRAMMY Nominee

"Jazz musicians are used to high wire acts. They engage in such activities each time they improvise. Theirs is a three-dimensional world that simultaneously delves into the past, responds to the present moment, and peers into the future. The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra (VJO) has been walking on that high wire since 1966 when it began as the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra. They are continuing the arduous task of keeping their balance while moving forward, all the while resisting the temptation of stopping, possibly losing their balance, and falling into the nostalgia-lined abyss known as the repertory orchestra or "Ghost Band."

Ben Wolfe Ensemble - My Kinda Beautiful

BEN WOLFE ENSEMBLE
My Kinda Beautiful

Cat. No. 200222

Traveling the Spaceways is a dedication to Sun Ra and features new arrangements as well as lesser known and unrecorded compositions by one of the most intriguing artists of the twentieth century.

"The music in this CD is about believing that one can celebrate another Being because of the impact that person has had on one's life. In organizing the music and musicians for this ensemble, I wanted a few people who knew Sun Ra as I had, and who had performed with him. Billy Bang, Craig Harris, and Radu all worked with the Master at some time. The rest of the ensemble members have all been influenced by Sun Ra’s creative vision in many ways and the experience of Sun Ra alumni sharing the music with younger artists has been profound."
- Ahmed Abdullah

"Abdullah and Co. have that something extra: zeal. That’s something that can’t be faked. Take a tune like the boppish 'Dancing Shadows' and 'Love in Outer Space'. Check Cody Moffett’s tasty drumwork on the former, or Masujaa’s guitar on the latter. Trombonist Craig Harris is paired with the truly stellar likes of violinist Billy Bang, Alex Harding (baritone) and Salim Washington (tenor). This is music that conveys a deep sincerity. Bands like this one might well be able to keep not only Sun Ra’s memory, but all that is good about jazz, alive."
