Intents and Purposes (482-1050) is the second release from Kyle
Bruckmann’s Wrack (their self-titled debut was released on Red
Toucan in 2003). Led by Bay Area double-reed player/composer
Kyle Bruckmann, the group’s chamber-group-meets-creative-improvisation
sound bridges the gap between modern classical music and Chicago’s experimental jazz scene.
For the past decade, Kyle Bruckmann has embraced musical
endeavors ranging from classical to electronic to experimental rock
to free improvisation. He has performed throughout the U.S. and
Europe as a composer, interpreter and improviser in addition to
appearing on more than 30 diverse recordings.
Intents & Purposes documents Bruckmann’s
first visit back to Chicago, where all the other
members of Wrack still reside, since moving to
San Francisco in 2003. The new version of the
group—former members Jeb Bishop and Kurt
Johnson were unavailable for this incarnation—
rehearsed for two days and spent five days on
the road performing before entering the studio
in April 2005. Although many of the pieces
were written on the West Coast, Bruckmann
credits Chicago’s creative music scene as their
underlying influence and the reason they were
recorded so successfully.
“...not your usual jazz quintet, not your run-of-the-mill chamber
music ensemble either.”
—François Couture, All Music Guide
“...like grand regal music played in a twisted, surreal kingdom.”
—Craig Matsumoto, KZSU-FM
“Kyle Bruckmann’s discography paints a picture of a modern day
renaissance musician.”
—Adam Strohm, Dusted
