Compositions range from the unforgettable John Coltrane (by Will Lee) to the haunting House Party Starting (by Herbie Nichols) to inventive reinterpretations of a Turkish traditional form Hijaz Oyun Havasi and a Brazilian choro from the 1930s entitled Mistura e Manda (by Benedito Lacerda) to original compositions by Ian Dogole, Sheldon Brown and Paul McCandless

About the Album
O Nosso Amor is Mark Weinstein’s best yet. An ensemble of first call Brazilian masters playing choro, samba, bossa nova, frevo, capoeira, Brazilian jazz, and batucada. Gorgeous melodies, spectacular improvisations and compelling rhythms. The classic sound of Brazil -- flute, classical guitar and percussion performed by giants of the genre. Weinstein’s 2005 recording Algo Más was called ‘one of the years most memorable recordings,’ by Mark Turner in ALLABOUTJAZZ.COM. A 2005 ‘critics pick’ in JAZZIZ and LATIN BEAT. Marks’ latest album, O Nosso Amor features guitarist Romero Lubambo and bassist Nilson Matta from the Trio de Paz, master drummer Paulo Braga and percussionists Guilerhme Franko and Jorge Silva. O Nosso Amor continues the journey!
Artist Profile
MARK WEINSTEIN made his first major recoding as a Jazz Flutist, Seasoning, in 1996. It was the first of many recorded excursions into Post-Bebop and World music. Combining jazz, contemporary dance music and traditional Cuban forms, his previous release, ALGO MÁS is a hard swinging yet lyrical record that adds new dimensions to Latin Jazz and Jazz Flute.
Brooklyn born, Mark was a trombonist, composer and innovator whose influential 1967 recording Cuban Roots introduced the Latin Jazz community to the concept of post-bebop performed with traditional Afro-Cuban drumming.
Playing trombone in the 1960's, Mark was a charter member of Eddie Palmieri's 'La Perfecta,' and along with Barry Rogers, helped define Salsa trombone. Writing for Orchestra Harlow he codified the trumpet and trombone brass section that is the basis for the New York Salsa sound. He worked with Chick Corea, Cal Tjader, Eddie and Charlie Palmieri, Tito Puente, Orchestra Harlow, Herbie Mann, Maynard Ferguson, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis, Lionel Hampton and Clark Terry. He played in the jazz workshops and rehearsal bands of Charlie Mingus, Joe Henderson, Clark Terry, Barry Harris, Chuck Israels, Duke Pearson and Kenny Durham.
Currently active in the New York jazz scene, Mark plays Jazz Flute with chamber-jazz ensembles in styles that include Post-Bebop, Afro-Caribbean, Brazilian, North Indian and Klezmer. Mark's recent recordings feature the finest jazz and world musicians including pianist Omar Sosa, guitarists, Romero Lubambo, Jean Paul Bourelly, Vic Juris, Ed Cherry and Brad Shepik, bassists Santi Debriano, Nilson Matta and Mike Richmond and percussionists, Pedrito Martinez, Cyro Baptista, Cindy Blackman, Jamey Haddad and Francisco Aguabella. He has recently recorded an album of Brazilian Jazz with Romero, Nilson and Paulo Braga slated for release in November. He is currently engaged in a project of African based jazz featuring Omar Sosa on vibes and marimba supported by musicians from Nigeria and the Ivory Coast.

About the Album
Chris Washburne and SYOTOS' latest release, Land of Nod, is their most adventurous. It pushes the genre of Latin Jazz into uncharted waters that combine raw musical innovation with an overtly strong political commentary on our contemporary world. This record resounds a postmodern Latin jazz that embraces dissonance, weaving contemporary up-tempo beats with a driving sound that suits it intended purpose well. As Washburne writes in the liner notes, "Dance to the rhythms. Moving your body can be an act of resistance. Let it be so." This is the fourth CD on Jazzheads for this artist.
