Over the years,
like many a musician, I have managed to collect hundreds of tapes. These consist
of everything from home recordings to sessions of my band and other groups. This
spring I decided to do some house cleaning and go through all these tapes,
keeping the interesting ones and throwing the rest. After several hours I came
across a tape that looked like new and had no written identification. I slipped
it in the tape deck and much to my surprise a wonderful band started playing
“That’s A Plenty”. Of course I recognised myself on clarinet but as for the rest
of the band I drew a blank. After more listening the band went into “The C-Jam
Blues” my theme song for many years. Then as luck would have it, my voice came
over the speakers announcing the musicians in the band(see
above).
Now I had the
names of the players but not a clue as to where and when it was recorded. For
this I went to my photo albums and looked for a picture with that combination of
musicians…more luck! I found a photo taken of the group at Portland’s “Street Of
Dreams” in 1987…it was then that it all came back to me!. The band was engaged
to play a concert that evening…we arrived early for a sound check and after
checking all the mikes the sound engineer asked me if I would like him to record
the concert through his system. I said sure and thanked him for his trouble.
After the concert I went home and probably ditched the tape in a bag with all
the others and there it sat, unplayed for some fifteen
years.
It is very
difficult for me to boast about myself and my own band, but it’s very obvious in
listening to the recording of this concert that this band is very good and very
hot and the musicians play flawlessly. This concert is a jewel and the feeling
the band projects here could never have been duplicated in a recording studio. I
am very proud to have been associated with these musicians. JIM
