Smokescreen is the culmination of two years of touring and writing for the trio since their last offering, the highly-respected Gig Bag.
Also featuring the immense talent of Stan Sulzmann on soprano and tenor saxophones, the band dig into deeper grooves and swing harder than ever.

Smokescreen was recorded the way the trio always prefer - as a performance, with minimal influence from digital editing techniques; Jim would have it no other way! Most of the tracks on the album are first takes, and as a result possess a vibrancy and dynamic that reflects the trio’s many live gigs. The addition of Stan Sulzmann on 3 of the tunes adds a new dimension to the already-rich soundscape, with the revered saxophonist integrating seamlessly with the ensemble. The five original compositions from Mike Gorman, and one from the pen of Jim Mullen, were developed as the group toured the UK in 2005/6, and are testament to the pair’s depth of harmonic understanding and melodic construction. The White Cockade is a nod from Jim to his roots, having known the songs and poems of Robert Burns since his childhood, and this striking interpretation is something of which the 18th-Century Scottish poet would surely approve.
