Clay Jenkins' career as a jazz trumpet player has covered a wide range of musical experiences. He has toured and recorded with the orchestras of Stan Kenton, Count Basie, Buddy Rich, Harry James, Jim Widner, John Clayton, and Jeff Hamilton. He has also performed and recorded with such artists as Billy Harper, Lyle Mayes, Milt Jackson, Peter Erskine, Dr. John, Joey Sellers, Bob Sheppard, Bill Perkins, Kim Richmond, Joe La Barbera, Billy Childs, Steve Hughton, Johnny Mandel, Lennie Niehaus, Miki Coltrane, Ernestine Anderson and Diana Krall.

Chuck Berg of Jazz Times calls Clay "one of today's brightest trumpet voices." Chick Corea stated that "Clay's music is warm and engaging."
